5/24/01 Question 104

Dear Preschool Teacher,
Do you know how long a 3 and 4 year old can be at a program without taking a nap?
When To Nap

Dear When To Nap,

Our regular preschool program is 9am - noon, with extended hours offered from 8am - 9am and noon - 3pm.  We do not "nap" at all, but we do have the children take a 10 minute "rest" or quiet time on a towel.  Hope this helps you.

"Ask The Preschool Teacher Staff"

Dear When To Nap,

I  have never heard of this requirement.  If a child is present during nap time they are usually required to rest also.  If a child arrives at 6 am and leaves before nap, even though he has been there possibly 7 hours, he is not required to nap.  Most children this age would need a nap though if they arrived that early. There is a requirement, however,  for  the time a nap must last.  It is usually between 1 to 2 and a half hours, depending on age.
It is really up to the staff, because after a certain age, 5 I think,
children are no longer required to rest.  Also Nap does not mean a child has to sleep, just be quiet so others can sleep.  They can do quiet activities after a short rest.
