5/24/01 Question 105

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I want to use a baseball theme in the dramatic play, sensory and art areas.  Do you have any ideas?  I work in a Head Start classroom.
Baseball Season

Dear Baseball Season,

Art area:  design baseball trading cards.  Put a picture of child on it and make up stats. Do ball rolling painting in a tub.  Dip a baseball into paint and have children swirl the tub gently.
Dramatic Play:  provide ball caps, shirts, gloves and bats and balls.  Talk about safety with swinging bats (may not want to use depending on your group).
Sensory Table:  place many types of balls in there and make comparisons. Chart types and sizes.  Could blindfold a child and have them feel the balls and guess what kind it is.  Sounds like a fun unit to try.

Dear Baseball Season,

There is always peanuts, popcorn and hot dogs!  Do be very careful with the peanuts -- so many children have allergies!  Maybe use bean bags to practice "tossing" peanuts like they do at the ball parks?  Of course, baseball caps, pennants for your favorite team, make "trading cards" with the children's pictures?  You could have real hot dogs to eat, as well as make paper ones and offer all the trimmings!
