Question 106
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
I want to be a preschool teacher and I
was told that you do not need a college degree to be one. This was
hard to believe but is it true? What do you need to do before you can
become a preschool teacher?
College Degree? Yes or No
Dear
College Degree? Yes or No,
You do need some classes, but not
necessarily a degree. This probably varies by state, so you will
have to ask at your local school. There is a minimum number of
classes to be able to teach, although you can be enrolled and working
at the same time.

Dear
College Degree? Yes or No,
Requirements are different depending on where you live. I would expect that you would need some sort of degree no matter where you are from. I am from Illinois and I had an associate's degree in another field. When I decided to teach preschool and be the director of my preschool, I had to go back to school and pick up 18 hours of early childhood education classes. I already had 6 hours toward it which enabled me to work as a preschool teacher while I was going to school. After I had 10 hours, I was able to be the director while I finished up the rest of the 18 hours. Those are the requirements where I am from. The requirements for you might be different. You will need to contact your agency that handles child welfare.

Dear
College Degree? Yes or No,
A preschool teacher needs what is required in their state. Each
one is different. Contact the group that licenses child
care centers in your area. Most people need to have first aid
training, communicable disease training and child abuse awareness
training. Beyond that, it may be a CDA ( Child Development
Associate, not a degree, but a certificate.) Or an
associate degree in Early Childhood Education. It is important
to know as much as possible about child development. Read, read,
read! And good luck!
