5/31/01 Question 109

Dear Preschool Teacher,
My 4 year old class is visiting an historic house (literally,
Washington slept here!).  We are cutting pictures from magazines to glue on poster board houses of furnishings, etc.  and talking about what we have that people in the past didn't.  Any other simple ideas?
Washington Slept Here

Dear Washington Slept Here,

Perhaps you could make tri-corner hats to wear.  You could lead into a unit on types of houses or where animals live compared to people.  Make butter in a shaker and explain that people used to have to make it.  Bake bread with the same explanation.

Dear Washington Slept Here,

How about making candles?  (It would take lots of supervision.) Or making bread from scratch?  Make butter to go with it?  Or weaving some fabric?  Sewing something by hand?  We certainly have lots of conveniences now!
