Question 119
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
I am a student trying to think of ideas for a
multicultural art
activity to do with my 3 year old classroom. I want to hang it up in
the classroom too. I can't think of anything that I haven't already
done before with them. Can you help?
Multicultural Art
Dear Multicultural Art,
One of my favorite resources for
Multicultural ideas at the preschool age is Hands
Around the World by Susan Milord. It is published by Williamson
Publishing. It puts ideas in order by the month. Some of the ideas for
July include: making paper star decorations for Tanabata a Japanese
festival or taking a walk for Ommegang a tradition from Brussels,
Belgium. Hope that helps a little!

Dear Multicultural Art,
You could take aluminum foil and mold it to
make masks. (African or Indian) You could make cloth dolls or
puppets. You could make clay bowls.( Might be kind of difficult
to hang ;o) ).
There are some great art resources out there. Mary
Ann Kohl has several multicultural art books available. You
may need to read up on the culture you want to represent in your art.
You can also use construction paper or paint in multicultural colors.
Be creative!
