Question 129
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
Do you know if it's safe for a 3-year old to
sleep on a waterbed? (or articles/websites that might have this
info) I know that it is not safe for infants.
Waterbed Safety
Dear Waterbed Safety,
Are you talking about a once in a while situation or a bed the child would be on permanently? If it's just once in awhile, I don't see where there would be a problem. When I got married, I slept on a water bed for 18 years and can't see where it would hurt a 3 year old. Even though I loved my water bed; I did not, however, purchase one for my children when they reached the age where they needed to switch from the crib. It's just my opinion but I wouldn't have a child sleep on one on a permanent basis. When sleeping on a water bed, it is very difficult to switch to a regular bed. I had a lot of trouble sleeping in hotels when we went away. I have since switched to a regular mattress in the last year, and it was very difficult. Now that I'm adjusted to it, it has become much easier for me to sleep when I'm away from home. That would be another thing, besides safety, to think about with your 3 year old.

Dear Waterbed Safety,
I have no idea if it is safe for a three year old to sleep in a
waterbed. I know that a firm mattress is recommended but, there is probably
a weight issue for the child. Can they get in and out on their own? Do they sleep on their stomach? I
wouldn't risk it.
