Question 146
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
I wanted to know what instruments and things
one would need in order to have a good music area for the children. If
you can give me a list of what instruments and props, to make its successful
I would appreciate it!
Makin' Music
Dear Makin' Music,
Children will enjoy all instruments as long as
they are easy to use! Bells are always a favorite, drums, triangles, wood
sticks, xylophone, shakers, even flags, banners and streamers for marching.
Just have a variety and have fun!

Dear Makin' Music,
A good music area needs a tape player or (CD) ,
headphones maybe, and an assortment of sturdy child-size instruments. You need
a a variety of music to play also! You need tambourines, maracas,
drums, cymbals, wood sticks (lummi) , bells, rain sticks and wood blocks.
These can be
purchased from a school supply catalog or homemade. The library would
have some books on making instruments. You also need some space for
moving around. You could have scarves for dancing or wearing.
Posters of instruments or musicians would be appropriate. The music notes
on a scale
would be a good visual. Keyboards are not very sturdy but if someone would be
willing to donate one, it would really enhance the area. The same for any
old band instrument or guitar. Teach the children to care for the
instruments and they will last for a long time. Have fun makin' music!
