Question 148
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
A friend and I will be starting a
preschool in September. One issue has come up ... Halloween. We have a
problem with the "spooky" side of it but know that parents
expect this holiday to be celebrated. Do you know of any sites or
ideas for crafts that would satisfy the parents' desire and also not
compromise our beliefs?
Thanks.

Dear Just Say No To Spooky!,
The center I am currently working at also
does not believe in celebrating Halloween so instead we have a Fall
Harvest celebration. We have the children make their own costumes
something that is associated to the fall (ex. Scarecrows, pumpkins,
apples, etc...) We than parade around in our costumes and when we are
done parading we have a fall party. You could also study the farm
around this time and have the children dress up as farm animals
instead.

If you establish a no Halloween
celebration policy at your center, let the parents know at enrollment
and it should be no problem. Have a Fall Festival or something similar
if they feel a party is necessary. If dressing up is an option to
consider, give them guidelines, like dressing like nursery rhyme
characters. Or a Harvest Party. Pumpkins are a good choice to focus on
during this time. There are lots of fun ideas at these
sites:

These sites have other links to send you to some other interesting
ideas too.

Another alternative would be to do a Fall Festival where you can concentrate on pumpkins, scarecrows, leaves,
and the color orange.
