3-18-00 Question 15

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I work in a preschool that did not previously have a report card per say. I am looking for a cute and positive way to give the children and parents some feed back on how the children are doing.  If you have any ideas I would love to hear them.
Thanks,
Positive feedback

Dear Positive Feedback,

The first step in assessing the children is to know a general guideline of where the children should be by their age. These sites might help with that:
http://www.nncc.org/Child.Dev/age.stage.page.html

http://www.ecdgroup.com/

http://ecrp.uiuc.edu/v1n2/new.html

Once you have brushed up on where the children should be you can now evaluate them. I made my own report card. I just researched where the children at my age level should be and I developed questions to fit in those guidelines.
Now here is the tricky part... Keeping the evaluations positive. I made a spot on the back on my evaluation for comments. I tried to pick out the students strongest points and make a nice comment to the parents about it.
The best way to keep it positive for the children is while evaluating them make it fun. See this article http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/ins/kidart.perf Also educate the
parents to know that just because little Tommy can not count to 20 yet does not mean he is failing, a slow learner, dumb, etc... Make sure to tell them this is just a very general guideline. This way the parents don't come down to hard on the children.
Another way to make a positive evaluation is to do certificates. There are a some books that specialize in certificates. You can make your own using clip art too! I use ones from the mailbox magazine and from the mailbox online companion. (You have to be a magazine subscriber to get the companion.) http://www.theeducationcenter.com/ . You can use a certificate that says Johnny can count to 20. Linda knows her colors. Parent and children love to get certificates of accomplishment. Now this is very positive and it is still getting the information to the parents.
Good Luck to you,
The Preschool Teacher

Dear Positive Feedback,

While surfing the net, I came across a progress report for kindergartners.  Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Good Luck!
