3-18-00 Question 16
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I have been interested for some time now in going back to school
to become a teacher. I would like to start out with preschool age
children and possibly later kindergarten. What type of
degree/certification is required? There is a local college that
offers a diploma program in early childhood education, is that enough?
Thanks for your help.
Interested in Education
Dear Interested in Education,
I think this question is one that could only
be truly answered by what state you live in. I know here in Michigan
you do not have to have any education (very sad) to teach preschool at
a private place. But in Illinois it is all different. So, I would
call a local university or even a community college and ask around.
Good luck:)

"Ask the Preschool Teacher" Staff
Dear Interested in
Education,
Check with your state for their requirements for
teaching. I know in my state, to be a Head Teacher in a preschool center
you need a certain number of credits in Early Childhood. But to
work in a home day care, the requirements are less. To teach
Kindergarten in a public school, you need a Bachelor's degree and teaching
certificate. Check out community colleges in your area to see if
they have Associate's Degrees in Early Childhood. This would be a
great place to start. You can move on from there!
I hope this helps you.
Good Luck :)

I agree with the staff above. It is difficult to give you
a direct answer with out knowing what state you are in. Ask Jeeves can
help you find the requirements for your area. Press
