3-25-00 Question 18

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am trying to make up feely bags for my class room. Do  you have any ideas that will help me make up my own bags  that are durable. I was thinking of using boxes or bags.  Which do you suggest?  Also, any ideas of things to put in the feely bags?
Just looking for more ideas.
Feely bag help

Dear Feely Bag Help,

You could use ziplock baggies, that is what I use. I have put paint in them (washable of course).  I have put pudding in them. You could also put in frosting, whip cream, or shaving cream.

Dear Feely Bag Help,

I have a shoe box that is covered with cool contact paper  and has a hole in the side of it for  the children to be able to stick their hands in it.
Some of the things I have used in it are.... food items... (spaghetti, peeled grapes) .. this week I am using 5 types of mittens and gloves with one of each pair inside the box and the other 5 outside the box and they have to feel around and figure out which matches which. You can put anything you want in there. Anything that maybe feels cool, or hard vs. soft, big vs. little, all sorts of things.
Remember to use smelly bottles sometimes too.. those are exciting as well!

Dear Feely Bag Help,
I think I would use a shoe box.  It is more sturdy for all the little hands that will be using it.  You can decorate it to make it look more exciting. Some suggestions for materials would be the rubber worms that fishermen use to fish with, cotton balls, felt, silky material, other materials that have different textures, netting, small rocks, sand paper, plastic and silk flowers, etc...  You might be able to find some inexpensive ideas at a dollar store.  I hope that this gave you some ideas.

Dear Feely Bag Help,
Another idea would be to use a Feely Bag to introduce Circle Time.  I made one out of a pillow case with a draw string along the top.  Put an object or objects into the bag and let the children pass it around to "guess" what we will talk about in circle.  They have lots of fun (and you will, too)!
Good Luck!
