3-25-00 Question 20
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am an Indian staying in Dubai, UAE. My daughter turned
3 early this month. The schools in Dubai have a minimum requirement of
a child to be three years old in order for them to join the school.
She will be 3+ by the time the session starts. She does not speak very
clearly, she is not 100% yet. But she is fast and grasps quickly.
She recognizes most of the alphabets and also colors. I am hesitant to
send her to school this year given her age but on the other side when I
see her picking up things fact I want to send her to school.
Can you please advise what I should do?
My 3-year old
Dear My 3-year Old,
Does the school have some sort of preschool or school
screening to see if she is ready for school? If it does, than that
will tell you for the most part, that she is ready. Also, why don't you
just give it a try, if you have this option. You can always take her
out and start again later. Or, why don't you home school her until you
feel comfortable about sending her.
I hope this helps!

Dear My 3-year Old,
I think your daughter would
benefit going to preschool and socializing with the other children.
I am sure she will be a leader since she is older. She will also
pick up more English and hopefully other good habits from the other
children. It is amazing how children pick up things so
quickly. I love watching them grow and learn in all areas. I
think she might really enjoy her day with the other children her age
and I think you will see a big, good difference in her. Good luck with
you decision.

Dear My 3-year Old,
Starting a new school is a
great opportunity for your child and family to meet new families in a
new place. Three is a wonderful age for children to attend a
preschool program they get lots of stimulation and opportunities to
experience many new things. It is also an excellent way to expand
language skills. Before you decide about the school, perhaps you can visit
for an hour or so and observe what they are doing in your child's potential
classroom. If you see a stimulating classroom with lots of
opportunities for socialization, creativity and individuality it is
likely a good place for a first school experience. At 3, kids very
much need to be kids-- lots of free play, art and music, socialization
and affectionate care! If you do not like what you see you are not
obligated at 3 to send your child to school. Likewise, you can
always try it out and withdraw her if your child does not appear to be happy
there.
Good luck ;o)

Dear My 3-Year Old,
Is this a program that is only
a few hours a couple days a week? I teach 3 year olds two days a
week for two hours. They really enjoy being around other kids their
own age. I concentrate on a color, shape, and number per month. Three
years old does seem young, but they do do well in a school setting.
