4-20-00 Question 30
Dear Preschool Teacher,
Hi! I am about to do a class demonstration next week.
I'll being demonstrating it to a group of 4-6 year old students. I have
absolutely no idea what to do. Are there any do's and don'ts. For example,
what not to say and what to say?
Thank you for your help.

Dear Hoping-to-be-a-teacher,
I'm not familiar with a 'demonstration' for this age.
But, you might try some cool science experiments and get the kids
actively involved in the 'recipes'. The important thing to remember is to be
positive and not give lots of 'don't do this' instructions. Also, ask open
ended questions which require more than a yes or no answer from the kids---
like, 'how do you feel about this', rather than 'did you like this'.
Have fun, whatever 'demonstrating' means ;o)

Dear Hoping-to-be-a-teacher,
I think teaching is one of the best parts of my life.
I love being able to enjoy these children on a daily basis. Some things
to remember to say or not say:
I never use the word "Don't"
I was told once that children really only recall the last part of what you
tell them. So, if you are telling children...Don't run! All they really
retain is the run part. So instead it would be smart to say.. walk.. or use
your walking feet.. Or slow down.. Another examples would be.. Use your
words.. (instead of don't say that or don't hit).
I also always get down on their level. I know
how children feel talking and listening UP to us. My husband is almost a
foot taller than I and my neck hurts sometimes from talking to him! :)
Lastly, I always try to keep a sense of humor
with the kids. I joke with them every day and often tell knock knock jokes (
I work with 4 year olds). My favorite knock knock joke is.. Knock knock ..
Who's there?.. Philip (happens to be my sons name:) .. Philip who?... Philip
my cup I'M thirsty!
Enjoy yourself!!!!:)
