8-28-00 Question 40
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I work with children between the ages of 3-5. It is
almost impossible to wake up the children after they have been napping.
What is the best way to wake up a room full of napping preschoolers?
Signed,
Get out of bed sleepy head
Dear Get out of bed sleepy
head,
Allow the children to slowly adjust to waking
up. Have them choose a book to bring to their cot or mat to look at while
you prepare the room for some quiet activities. I would leave the
lights dim, or just open the blinds and let the natural light illuminate
your classroom, if possible. You might try putting on a music tape for
them to listen to, but nothing too relaxing. In our center, we put out
quiet activities on the tables, such as puzzles, Lego kits, play dough, and
markers and paper. After 20 minutes or so, the children seem ready to
do more structured activities.
Hope this helps you!

Dear Get out of bed sleepy head,
At our
center, we wake the children up one at a time by rubbing their backs and
talking to them. We also turn the lights on and play a Greg and Steve
tape. The children often will wake each other up as well.

Dear Get out of bed sleepy
head,
I teach 3 year olds and I just go to each one and pat
them on the back and talk to them to tell them its time to wake up. They
begin to stir and stretch and very slowly wake up.

Dear Get out of bed sleepy
head,
The best way to wake children up is gently.
Turn on the lights, walk from child to child and gently rub their back and
softly say their name and say to wake up. But if the whole group is
hard to wake up, have they had enough rest? Three to fives need
between one to two hour naps each day. Each child is different of
course. That is an average.
