8-28-00 Question 42
Dear Preschool Teacher,
Our church has recently started a daycare. It truly is
meeting a community need. As always, they are barely meeting daily
expenses and there is a real need for playground equipment. Local
fundraisers are needed just to keep them afloat as this is a somewhat
depressed economic area. Do you have any suggestions on grants or any
other ways extra money could be secured? You help is greatly
appreciated.

I have never been in a private school and needed to
have fund raisers. In my public school, $1.00 Candy bars were a
great seller because parents could take them to work and put them in the
lunch room. Everyone is always looking for a treat!

One fundraiser we do is to have each child draw a
picture of whatever they want. We label it what they say it is, put
their name and age under it. Then we make calendars out of them we put
five or six pictures to a page. We have printed them ourselves or have sent
them out to be printed. We charge $4 a calendar. We made four
hundred dollars the last time.

The center I work at has sold Jerry's T's in the past. Last
February we also sold Tupperware and did very well. You could also go online
and search for Fundraisers and several different companies that have
fundraisers should come up. I did this recently and sent for their
information because we were trying to find other ways to raise money as
well.

I do not have a great deal of experience in fund-raising,
but I can tell you about some fund raisers we've done at our school in the
past. We have sold environmental t-shirts, which seemed to sell pretty
well, as they were reasonable, and many people bought them as gifts.
We've also sold holiday gifts from a mail-order company - all of the items
were under $20 and most were under $10. This company gave us a 50%
profit on all of the items we sold. Another idea might be to create
t-shirts, tote bags, and coffee mugs with your school's logo on it (if you
don't have one, you can create one.) I'm sure most parents would
purchase an item, knowing that it would benefit their child's school.
And by offering several different items with a reasonable price range, you
will probably get a good turn out. You can look up fund-raising
companies on the internet, and I'm sure something will be of interest to you
and the families you serve. Good luck!
