Question 52
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I have a very simple question that I must ask! What
does it take to be a
good successful preschool teacher?
Thank You,
What does it take?
Dear What does it take?
First of all, you need to love and want to be with children. You need to have great patience. I feel you need to be an organized person. You need to be a person who can "roll with the punches" so to speak and be able to see when something isn't working with the kids and move on to something else. You need to have good communication with parents. You need to be the type of person who can make the day fun for the children. You also need to have kindness.

Besides the schooling and units, how about a love of children! It's hard
work, not always the best pay or recognition, but the smile and hug of a
child is priceless! When they say "I love you," it melts my heart! You do
need to be able to plan appropriate activities, be able to adjust if something isn't working or if something is going too well to stop. Be
flexible! Keep looking for new ideas -- keep it fresh for yourself and for
the kids. Ask questions and ask for help. Enjoy the kids and their enthusiasm and activities. Have fun!

A good preschool teacher has to have a desire to put the children's
needs first. Then she/he will be successful.
Experience usually helps. Education is not the most important thing but
can be very useful. You must understand what motivates children, usually
accomplished through knowing the ages and stages of child development. You
have to love and respect children. It is more than just babysitting. It is
so many things. A good teacher will make a child curious about the world
and allow and assist them in exploring it. A successful teacher always says
"let's find out!"

In addition to the basics such as organizational and leadership skills, you
need to remember to be a child yourself. Interact and play with the students. Show them how to laugh and have fun. Present new activities and
then do it with them. Get down on the floor with them. I read somewhere
that a child's personality is set by the age of 5. Sorry, I've forgotten
where I read that. But keep that in mind because we set the basis for a
life-long journey through education. If we make it fun, they will have fun.
I hope this answers your question.
