1/18/01 Question 56
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am an afternoon teacher at a Montessori school and I have two boys who will not come in when the other children do they rather stay outside and play help I have tried just about everything to get them in,
Tearing my hair out

Dear Tearing my hair out,

You didn't mention what you have tried, but perhaps just some notices would make for smoother transitions.  Try "Johnny, we have 10 more minutes to be outside."  Then give notice at 5 minutes, 2 minutes, and now it's time to clean up and go in!  If it's because they have JUST started painting or
whatever, perhaps try to direct them to painting while there is still plenty of time to complete the painting.  Maybe your aide or director could assist in redirecting the boys to inside time.  Try telling them of the next activity inside they might enjoy, or give stickers to the children as they come to line up.  Good luck!

Dear Tearing my hair out,

My suggestion is give the boys the choice before you go outside.  Boys when it is time to line up you must join us.  If you do not..  you will sit out the next time.  Remind them when it is time to come in.

Dear Tearing my hair out,
I  feel that this is a safety issue.  If they won't come in ,do they listen the rest of the time?  I would tell them the next time that they would lose their outside privileges if they do not line up when told.  The next day take those who listened out and leave the others inside.  You will need the cooperation of another teacher or your director to watch them while you are outside.  Give them another chance on the next day.  It might also work if you take away 5 minute increments also instead of the whole play time.  Be consistent.  The boys will probably test you.  Another option if you can't leave them inside is to hold their hands for the time they are outside.  Tell them they have choices and they have chosen to not listen to
your warnings.  Give them the responsibility for their behavior.  Do not talk about it the whole time , only when they ask why or if they can play. We would all rather stay outside, but we have things to do inside too!
