1/31/01 Question 58
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I think my 2 1/2 year old son may be color
blind. He can always identify green and blue but consistently
calls red - green and yellow - blue. Is it too soon to know for
sure? If he is color blind, will this present problems in
preschool? How is a color blind student handled? Thank you
for your input.
Color Curious
Dear Color Curious:
I really don't know much about color blindness, but since your son
is only 2 1/2 it could be that he just is still confused about the
color names. If you have him tested, perhaps by your school
district or doctor, and find he is color blind then I would be sure to
tell his teachers. It shouldn't be a problem.

"Ask The Preschool Teacher Staff"
Dear Color Curious,
Two and 1/2 is still young to distinguish
colors. If you are concerned you should ask his pediatrician
about it. My school system in Georgia has Vision Teachers that
can perform diagnostic tests upon request. Don't be overly
concerned at this stage. Each child is different and learns at
different rates. Hope this is the answer you were looking for.
