Question 59
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am presently taking classes to get my CDA. In
class we are doing themes. My assignment is to come up with a
large motor skill idea using apples. Please help.
Hanging On A Limb
Dear Hanging On a Limb,
This activity doesn't use apples themselves, but it is related to the apple theme. I play "Worm Through the Apple" game. What I do is have the kids make a line then spread their legs--but not too far or they'll fall over. This is the "apple". Then the person who is at the end of the line gets to be the "worm" first. He crawls through all the other children's legs like a worm would. When he is done, he stands up at the other end and spreads his legs and then the next kid on the end is the worm and so on. The kids love to play this!

Dear Hanging On a Limb,
Try acting out this little song:
Way up high in the apple tree
(standing, shade eyes with hand and look up)
2 little apples smiled down at me
(show 2 fingers, shade eyes with hand and look down)
I shook that tree as hard as I could
(standing, shake hands and arms)
Down came the apples, they sure were good!
(squat, rub tummy)
Also, how about relays with apples? (You don't have to have a
"winner"/"loser")
Pass apple over first child, under second, repeat.
Pass apple without using hands. etc...

Dear Hanging On a Limb,
I would suggest a game of "Pass the Apple". Stand the children in a
circle and play music. Stop the music and see who is holding the apple.
You could have that person do an exercise or movement and have everyone copy
it. ( kind of like hot potato but with more activity!)
