Question 66
Dear Preschool
Teacher,
Is there a song that teaching a toddler to tie his
shoes?
One, two no more buckle my shoe
Dear
One, two no more buckle my shoe,
First of all, toddlers are too young to
tie shoes. They do not have the necessary motor skills needed to
manipulate the laces. Most children are at least four before they are
able to perform this skill. There are a few rhymes available out
there and a good resource book will have one. Go to the library and
ask them for a teacher resource book and copy the page. It is also an
eye and hand coordination activity. Their brain has to be
able to process the order in which it is done. Most children just knot
their laces for a while!

Dear
One, two no more buckle my shoe,
Your child is really too young to be learning
how to tie shoes as this skill takes more complex movements than they
are not ready for. Most children are closer to 5 years old when
they can master this skill. Practice and modeling the skill will
help. when your child is older perhaps this little song will
help you.
Sung to: "Splish Splash I was taking
a Bath"
Criss Cross and go under the bridge
Then you got to pull it tight.
Make a loop but keep a long tail
That is how to do it right
Then you take the other string (I think this is where you rap a bit)
and you wrap it 'round the loop
Pull it through the hole (you still need to remind them to pull tight)
Now you got the scoop
Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops
together)
Now you made a Double Knot!!

Dear
One, two no more buckle my shoe,
Most toddlers
and preschoolers aren't ready to tie their shoes yet. I do
have a couple 4 year olds who can tie their shoes beautifully. Most
can't but fiddle around with trying.
If
a child has a real interest and appears to be ready to learn to tie
his/her shoes then go for it. There is a board you can buy in the
shape of a shoe that has laces to buy. You could also make your own.
If
teaching the child causes frustration, stop. It's not worth
it! They will learn better when they're 5 or 6.
