3/1/01 Question 74

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am a preschool teacher at a fairly new center. I am trying to come up with 5 basic rules that will cover everything that I want for the children. It sounds simple but I have been struggling with how to word them so the children will understand and also at the same time be appropriate for them.
Five Basic Rules

Dear Five Basic Rules,
     1)  Always take turns
     2)  Always walk
     3)  Be nice to each other
     4)  Always Listen.
These are the four (sorry we don't have five) rules. We write then out and include pictures where we can.  Hope this is helpful.

Dear Five Basic Rules,

These are "rules" that we used in  our Pre-school.
    In our Pre-school we will....
    Use our inside voices.
    Use our walking feet
    Use our words.
    Be kind to our friends
    Have lots of fun!
They are simple and cover most situations that may come up. Using your words (instead of your hands to hit, etc.) will take some work with the younger children at first, but as the year goes on these phrases are all you need to use to remind the children and maintain a happy classroom. They are positive, telling a child what to do instead of what not to do.  I hope
this helps.

Dear Five Basic Rules,
You want to keep it simple and cover a lot of situations.
     1) Keep your hands, feet and teeth to yourself.
     2) Show respect for yourself and others.
     3) Walk inside.
     4) Look and listen.
     5) Speak softly (quietly).
You can cover just about any occurrence with these.

Dear Five Basic Rules,

Depending on what age group you are working with, the less rules you will want. Young children need simple rules using no  "NO" in them. Phrasing your sentences is the most important. In my center I only use three rules.
      1. Walk in classroom.
      2. Use a soft voice.
      3. Pick up area, before moving to another area.
Young child have short attention spans and all rules need to be short and to the point.
