Question 80
Dear Preschool Teacher,
I have never learned how to construct my own
flannel board and would love to get some ideas, any suggestions would
be appreciated.
Thanks,
Flannel board woes
Dear Flannel board woes,
I took a thin sheet of plywood, used
sprayed glue on the board and covered it with felt.
I used pelon to make my flannel board
stories. This seem to stick better than felt.
Hope this help. You can actually buy a small flannel board cheaper,
than making one. But that was 12 year ago.

Dear Flannel board woes,
I believe
all you need is some flannel that will cover the area plus extra to
overlap and secure and a piece of board or heavy cardboard to use as
the base. Secure the flannel to the board on the back. You
might like to hinge two boards so it will stand up, then cover it all.
Interfacing can be colored and cut to make story
pieces, or you can use paper and attach sandpaper or possibly flannel
to the back of the paper pieces. Laminating or using clear
contact paper on paper pieces helps them to last for many story
tellings!

Dear Flannel board woes,
To make a flannel board,
you need a piece of very heavy cardboard or a piece of a hard wood, paneling
or plywood. Foam board will work if it isn't getting moved alot
or the children don't use it. Sand all the rough edges.
Purchase felt or flannel enough to cover the front of the board and
overlap the edges. Using a staple gun, pull the edges taut but
not too tight (don't want to tear the fabric or felt) over the edges
and staple to the back of the wood. Trim the edges if you want
to but it is not
necessary. A good size is 4 foot long by 3 foot tall. It will be
heavy if you use a hard wood. Be careful if you only plan to
lean it when the kids use it. It would be better to permanently
attach it to a wall if it is wood.
