3/22/01 Question 87

Dear Preschool Teacher,

I have to do an activity in a preschool dealing with children's
literature.  It needs to include other areas as like an art activity, song, or even a snack that goes along with the same topic. I was wondering if you knew of any good books or topics that stood out or were fun.
Thank you,
Best Book Unit

Dear Best Book Unit,

A few books that I have used are:
Cookies Week
Elmer
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
The Mitten
The Gingerbread Man
Three Billy Goat Gruff

Hope this helps.

Dear Best Book Unit,

I have a book called Book Cooks.  It's for literature-based classroom cooking, by Creative Teaching Press.  It includes 35 recipes for favorite books.  I have the book for K-3.  It has some fun ideas you might like to try. It cost about $10.

Dear Best Book Unit,

My favorite author to do a unit on is Eric Carle.  He has so many neat books.  His books are easy to come up with extensions.

Dear Best Book Unit,

One of the books I use that has a lot of activities that go along with it is "It looked like Spilt Milk"  I do an art project where I fold a blue construction paper in half and have the children drop white paint on the paper then we fold the paper and rub it.  When the paper is dry I go around and take dictation and ask each child what her "cloud" looks like.  I then compile all of the art projects in a class book and let the children take
turns taking it home.  I also have one day where I let the children play with shaving cream on the table and create their own clouds.
Another book that lends itself to a lot of art activities is "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. On of my favorite things to do with this book is to make a big mitten out of construction paper and then I make the animals and I have the children participate in a retelling of the story using the mitten and the animals. The children really enjoy this.
I hope this helps you.

Dear Best Book Unit,

There are so many good books it is hard to choose just one.  I love books and can think of lots!  Any Eric Carle book is wonderful.  The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins would relate to many of the areas for lessons. You could make chocolate chip cookies for snack, sing one little , two little, three little cookies ( to the tune of ten little Indians ).  For art, you could finger paint a circular shape paper brown like a cookie  (or paint with a brush.)
