4/30/01 Question 94

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am interested in compiling portfolios for my preschoolers. I have no idea where to begin, or where to look for resources. Could you direct me to a place for ideas, or do you have your own suggestions?
Portfolio Problem

Dear Portfolio Problem,

What I consider a portfolio for a preschooler is a sampling of their work throughout the year.  I have them draw a picture of themselves (whole body) at the beginning, middle and end of the year.  I also save several crafts per month, trying to show the growth in particular skills such as cutting, coloring, following directions, creativity, etc. I usually compile this to give to parents in the spring, so I also include photographs that I have
taken.  It ends up being a portfolio and memory book combined!  Hope this helps you.

Dear Portfolio Problem,

A journal is also a great for adding to a child's portfolio. More information on journals can be found here.
