5/10/01 Question 96

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I teach "K" and this is my first year. I am looking for an Art project to do with the letter "Y". Please send me any ideas you may have.
Thanks,
Troubled in "K" with "Y"

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

Try yellow yarn.  You can make a yo-yo design or fill in a yak picture (will look like hair).  Then it will be a yellow yarn yak!  Or lace a large Y cut-out shape.  Use cardboard and punch holes through the center of the Y shape to lace through.  Hope that is not too confusing.

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

I cut out a large Y and allow the children to cut up pieces of yarn and glue on the Y.  I have also cut out a yak and had them glue the yarn all over it.  Since your children are K they should be able to cut their own out.

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

Besides the other ideas given about yellow, yak, yo-yo, yarn, how about finger painting with yogurt?  Draw a picture of "you." Try to yodel?  Use egg yolks?  Measure with a yardstick? Grow a yam?  Paint with yam prints (like potato prints).  Hope these help.

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

Several people have given some good suggestions.  I have a few more to offer.  Read "Yertle the Turtle" by Dr. Seuss. Talk about all the things he wanted to rule in his land.  Discuss what happened to Yertle in the end because of his greed.  Have a paper-size turtle with a large Y on the back.  The students can color and cut out the turtle then put glue on the "Y" and fill it in with yellow yarn.
"Y" play dough: yellow play dough, yogurt lids, yardsticks.  The children can press the yogurt lids and yardsticks into the yellow play dough to form pictures and patterns.  They can also roll the dough (like snakes) to form "Y".
Talk Time:  ask the following: name a flavor of yogurt, name something that is yellow, name something that you could use yarn for (knitting, leash, art project, hair bow, etc.), name something that you think is yummy to eat, name something that you think is yucky to eat.
Game:  if possible, get pictures of "Y" things (yacht, yarn, yardstick, yield sign, yolk (egg), yogurt, yo-yo, yak, yellow crayon (marker), yawn.  Maybe as an alternative you could use the real objects!! Begin by have the children name each object.  Repeat each word, emphasizing the "Y" sound. Hand out the objects.  One student comes up and holds the card/object as
everyone else says: (object, object) What Do You Hear? The student says: I hear a (another child's object) beginning like me.  Then that student comes up front.  Repeat until all the objects are gone then begin again. (I hope that makes sense.  It really is lots of fun to play.)
Hope all these helped in some way.

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

My kids love to do "snippet" pictures.
You draw the outline of a large letter Y on a  piece of paper, and give the children yellow bits of construction paper (torn or cut) - lots of them. The children fill in the letter Y with glue and cover it with snippets.
Enjoy

Dear Troubled in "K" with "Y",

Here is a little rhyme I have used with the letter  "Y".
"Young Yolanda"
Young Yolanda rides a yak,
Sitting proudly on its  back.
Young Yolanda sails a yacht,
Especially when it's very hot.
Young Yolanda does her yoga
In a sunny yellow toga.
Young Yolanda just loves yams,
Served up nicely with canned hams.
Young Yolanda says yogurt's yummy,
Good and healthy in your tummy!
Everyone has hit all kinds of great art project you can use. I thought I would give you a cute rhyme. Hope it helps.
